The Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation
The Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (‘SFDR’) is European
regulation introducing rules set to increase the transparency on market
participants, like Truffle, and their approach to sustainability.
At Truffle we believe that sustainability contributes to improved risk
adjusted returns. ESG characteristics of an investment should be
considered in portfolio construction as generating sustainable returns
over the long term should be the goal. For Truffle, this is already
embedded in our way of thinking as Private Markets require long term
commitments; hence each investment case should be sustainable. We want the
fund managers whose funds we invest in and with whom we have long standing
relationships, to create sustainable returns with robust strategies*.
The inclusive thinking needed on an investment level, is also applied on
Truffle as a company itself. We want our business to be sustainable and
apply our investment philosophy on our activities as well. Whether it is
our approach with digitalising the way investments can be made by our
investors in Private Markets, or how Truffle employees can make the best
use of available resources. Truffle is also an inclusive and equal
opportunity employer.
* Value of investments can go up as well as down. There is no guarantee
that a (fund) investment will achieve its set objectives and generate more
returns than what is invested.
Investment Philosophy
Truffle mainly invests in Private Market funds. For these funds, Truffle
is not the manager of the fund and as such does not have discretion over
the investment companies that will be part of these funds. Therefore, the
assessment of sustainability factors takes place within our research on
the fund managers. Part of our investment analysis is whether the fund
managers take sustainability into account in their investment approach.
These considerations are aimed at the fund’s exposure to environmental,
social and governance (ESG) risks that could have an adverse effect on the
investment. For direct investments, Truffle can exert more influence over
the investment companies and will apply an ESG targeted approach.
The funds that Truffle launches follow our investment process which
integrates the sustainability factors in the investment decision making.
Subject to final approval from the regulatory authorities, Truffle expects
that the funds will be classified as Article 6 considering the limited
discretion Truffle has over the underlying investment companies. It is our
ambition to engage with the fund managers to embed environmental and
socially promoting products (Article 8) or products targeting sustainable
investments (Article 9).
